How to Pay with Klarna on Uniplaces

Klarna is one of the payment methods at the Uniplaces checkout. You select it when you send your booking request and — depending on your country and Klarna plan — pay in one go or in instalments. Whichever option you choose, the payment is only taken once the landlord accepts your request. Klarna covers what you pay through Uniplaces: your first rental payment, the service fee and, where the listing has one, the holding deposit (an extra amount some listings charge to hold the room, passed on to the landlord). Payments made directly to your landlord — security deposit, admin fee, later rent — are not processed through Uniplaces.

What is Klarna?

Klarna is a payment service that lets you pay in full or split the payment across several instalments. It is widely used across Europe and is available on Uniplaces for eligible bookings.

Klarna is a separate service from Uniplaces. You need an active Klarna account, or to be eligible to create one at checkout. Klarna’s own terms and eligibility criteria apply in addition to the Uniplaces Terms of Service.

How Klarna fits the Uniplaces booking flow

On Uniplaces, you provide payment details when you send a booking request. A temporary authorisation is placed for the amount due — first rental payment, service fee and any holding deposit — and the payment is only taken after the landlord accepts. If the request is declined or expires (the landlord has 48 hours to respond), nothing is taken and the authorisation is released.

Paying with Klarna does not change this. You complete Klarna’s authorisation when you send the request; the payment goes through when the landlord accepts. How Klarna then collects the money from you — in one payment, later, or in instalments — depends on the option you chose and on Klarna’s terms, not on Uniplaces.

Step 1 — Complete your booking request

Select your listing and dates and fill in your personal details as normal.

Step 2 — Select Klarna on the payment page

On the payment page, choose Klarna as your payment method.

Step 3 — Choose your Klarna option

Pick pay in full, pay later, or pay in instalments. The options shown depend on your country and your Klarna account.

Step 4 — Complete the Klarna authorisation

Follow Klarna’s flow. You may be asked to log in to Klarna or verify your identity.

Step 5 — Return to Uniplaces and send your request

Back on Uniplaces, confirm and send your request. You are only charged once the landlord accepts it, and you then receive an email confirming that the booking is paid and confirmed.

Klarna payment options

The options available to you depend on your country and your Klarna account status. Common options include:

  • Pay in full — Klarna collects the whole amount in one payment
  • Pay later — Klarna collects the amount after a set number of days
  • Pay in instalments — the total is split across several monthly payments to Klarna

Not all options are available in all countries. Klarna’s availability and payment plans vary by market — check the Klarna website for details on what’s available in your country.

What you can and can’t pay with Klarna

Klarna, like every checkout method, covers only what you pay through Uniplaces: the first rental payment, the service fee and any holding deposit. Nobody should ask you to pay these by bank transfer, in cash or to a personal account.

Everything else on the listing — security deposit, admin fee, rent in advance, rent from the second month onwards — is paid directly to your landlord once your booking is confirmed (the landlord has accepted and you have received the confirmation) and is never processed by Uniplaces. Any payment to your landlord is legitimate as long as it is stated on the listing you booked and your booking is already confirmed. If it isn’t on the listing, or the amount is higher, contact the Uniplaces support team before paying.

What if my Klarna payment fails?

If your Klarna payment is declined, first check your Klarna account for any outstanding balances or issues. Klarna may decline a payment if your account has unpaid amounts or if you’ve reached your spending limit.

If the issue isn’t resolved through Klarna directly, try a different payment method at checkout — a credit or debit card will work as an alternative. For further help, contact the Uniplaces support team.

Is Klarna available in all countries?

Klarna is available in most European countries, including Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. However, availability at checkout depends on both your country and your Klarna account eligibility. If Klarna doesn’t appear as an option at checkout, it may not be available for your booking or location.

Cancellations and refunds when you paid with Klarna

Paying with Klarna does not change the refund rules. If you cancel a confirmed booking, the first rental payment is refunded according to the cancellation policy of the listing you booked, measured from the contract start date; the Uniplaces service fee is never refunded when you cancel. If the landlord cancels a confirmed booking, you are refunded in full — first rental payment, service fee and any holding deposit. If you receive a refund, Klarna updates your payment plan accordingly.

When to contact Uniplaces support

  • You’ve been asked to pay your first rental payment, service fee or holding deposit outside the Uniplaces checkout
  • A landlord is asking for a payment that isn’t on the listing you booked, or for more than the listed amount

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch from Klarna to a card after booking?

Once a booking is confirmed and payment is processed, the payment method cannot be changed. For future bookings, you can select a different payment method at checkout.

Is Klarna safe to use on Uniplaces?

Yes — Klarna is a regulated payment service and all transactions through Klarna on Uniplaces are processed securely. Your Klarna payment details are handled by Klarna directly and are not shared with Uniplaces or the landlord.

What happens to my Klarna plan if I cancel my booking?

Any refund of the first rental payment follows the listing’s cancellation policy; the service fee is not refunded. If you receive a refund, Klarna updates your payment plan. The timeline depends on both the Uniplaces cancellation policy and Klarna’s processing time. Contact Klarna directly about your specific plan.

Can I pay my security deposit or admin fee with Klarna?

Not through Uniplaces. These are paid directly to your landlord, so the Uniplaces checkout — and Klarna as an option in it — does not apply to them. Your landlord confirms the amount and payment method with you; check that both match the listing before paying.
