To extend your stay, agree the new end date and the rent for the extra period with your landlord, in writing, before your current end date — landlords are not obliged to accept. The rent for the extended period is paid directly to your landlord, like all rent after your first rental payment. Once you have agreed, tell the Uniplaces support team so your booking record reflects the new end date: once a booking has been accepted, neither you nor the landlord may take it off the platform.
Step 1 — Contact your landlord before your end date
Contact your landlord directly — their phone number and email address are in your booking confirmation email — at least 2 weeks before your current end date — ideally more. Don’t leave it until the last few days, as the landlord may already have the property booked for another tenant.
Step 2 — Agree the new dates and the rent
Confirm the new end date and whether the monthly rent will change for the extended period. Rent increases for extensions are possible but not automatic — it is whatever you and the landlord agree. Also agree what happens to your security deposit (see below). Get the agreement in writing — by email or message — and keep it; do not rely on a verbal agreement alone.
Step 3 — Tell Uniplaces support
Once you have both agreed, contact the Uniplaces support team with the agreed new end date and rent, so that your booking record reflects the extension. Uniplaces does not run a payment schedule after your first rental payment, so nothing changes in what you pay through Uniplaces: the rent for the extended period is paid directly to your landlord, on the terms you agreed.
What if a step doesn’t work?
- Landlord not responding — send a follow-up message to the contact details in your booking confirmation email. If there’s still no response, contact the Uniplaces support team; they can try to reach the landlord, but they cannot agree an extension on the landlord’s behalf.
- Landlord declines the extension — see the section below on what to do next.
- Booking record not updated after agreement — contact Uniplaces support with a record of your agreed extension.
Why extend through Uniplaces?
Once a booking request has been accepted, the Terms of Service do not allow either you or the landlord to bypass Uniplaces and make a booking for the same accommodation directly. Extending through the platform keeps your booking record accurate, gives you a written record of the agreed dates and rent, and means the Uniplaces support team can advise if something goes wrong. A private extension arranged off the platform breaches the Terms of Service for both parties.
Can the landlord refuse to extend?
Yes — landlords are not obliged to extend your stay. They may have another tenant lined up, plans for the property, or simply prefer not to. If your landlord declines, start searching for a new listing as early as possible.
Use the same approach you used for your original booking — search by area, set your dates and send requests to listings that match your needs. If you’re in a city like Barcelona or Lisbon where demand is high, give yourself at least 3–4 weeks to find something.
How far in advance should you ask?
At least 2 weeks before your current end date — ideally more. The earlier you ask, the more options you have. If you wait until the last week and the landlord says no, you’ll have very little time to find an alternative.
In cities with high student housing demand, some landlords have the next tenant lined up a month in advance. Ask early and you’ll be in a much stronger position.
What you pay for the extended period — and to whom
Your first rental payment, the Uniplaces service fee and, where the listing had one, the holding deposit (a payment that reserved the accommodation for you — not a damages deposit) were paid through Uniplaces when your original booking was confirmed. Everything after that — including all rent for the extended period — is paid directly to your landlord and is never processed by Uniplaces. This is not in conflict with extending “through Uniplaces”: the agreement is made and recorded on the platform, but the rent itself is paid to your landlord. Pay only what you agreed in writing for the extension; if your landlord asks for a payment you did not agree, or for a higher amount, contact Uniplaces support before paying.
Does the security deposit change?
The security deposit is paid directly to your landlord and is a matter between you and the landlord; Uniplaces does not hold it. Whether the deposit you already paid carries over to the extended period, or whether the landlord asks for a top-up, depends on what you agree. Confirm this with your landlord in writing when agreeing the extension terms.
When to contact Uniplaces support

Frequently asked questions
Can I extend my stay without going through Uniplaces?
No. Once a booking request has been accepted, neither you nor the landlord may make a booking for the same accommodation directly, outside the platform — the Terms of Service prohibit it for both parties. Agree the extension with your landlord, then tell Uniplaces support so your booking record is updated.
Will my rent increase for the extended period?
This depends on what you and the landlord agree. Rent increases for extensions are possible but not automatic — negotiate directly with the landlord and confirm the agreed rate in writing before telling Uniplaces.
Can I extend multiple times?
Yes, as long as the landlord agrees each time. Tell Uniplaces support about each extension so your booking record stays up to date.
What if I need to extend urgently with very little notice?
Contact both your landlord and the Uniplaces support team immediately. Explain the urgency — the team can try to reach the landlord, but whether to extend is the landlord’s decision, and there are no guarantees if they have other commitments for the property.
What if I want to leave earlier instead?
Once you have signed the tenancy agreement or moved in, leaving early is governed by the termination terms of your tenancy agreement with the landlord. See Can I Move Out Before My Contract End Date?
