How to Extend Your Stay on Uniplaces

To extend your stay on Uniplaces, contact your landlord through the platform before your end date. Both parties must agree — Uniplaces then updates your booking dates.

How to extend your stay

  1. Contact your landlord through Uniplaces before your current end date — ideally at least 2 weeks in advance. Don’t leave it until the last few days, as landlords may already have the property booked for another tenant.
  2. Agree on new dates and any price changes — confirm the new end date and whether the monthly rent will change for the extended period. Get this agreement in writing through the platform.
  3. Uniplaces updates your booking — once both parties have agreed, contact the Uniplaces support team to update your booking dates officially. Do not rely on a verbal or private agreement alone.

Once your booking is updated, your new end date is reflected in your Personal Dashboard and your payment schedule is adjusted accordingly.

What if a step doesn’t work?

  • Landlord not responding — send a follow-up message through Uniplaces. If there’s still no response, contact the Uniplaces support team and they can help facilitate the communication.
  • Landlord declines the extension — see the section below on what to do next.
  • Booking not updating after agreement — contact Uniplaces support directly with a record of your agreed extension and they’ll update the dates manually.

Can the landlord refuse to extend?

Yes — landlords are not obligated to extend your stay. They may have another tenant lined up, plans for the property, or simply prefer not to. If your landlord declines, start searching for a new listing as early as possible.

Use the same approach you used for your original booking — search by area, set your dates and send requests to listings that match your needs. If you’re in a city like Barcelona or Lisbon where demand is high, give yourself at least 3–4 weeks to find something.

How far in advance should you ask?

At least 2 weeks before your current end date — ideally more. The earlier you ask, the more options you have. If you wait until the last week and the landlord says no, you’ll have very little time to find an alternative.

In cities with high student housing demand, some landlords have the next tenant lined up a month in advance. Ask early and you’ll be in a much stronger position.

Does the security deposit change?

If you already paid a security deposit for your original tenancy, this typically carries over to the extended period — you don’t need to pay a new deposit for the same property. Confirm this directly with your landlord when agreeing the extension terms, as arrangements can vary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extend my stay without going through Uniplaces?

Technically yes, but it’s not recommended. Any arrangement made privately outside the platform is not covered by the UniTrust Guarantee. If something goes wrong during an unofficial extension, Uniplaces cannot intervene on your behalf.

Will my rent increase for the extended period?

This depends on what you and the landlord agree. Rent increases for extensions are possible but not automatic — negotiate directly with the landlord and confirm the agreed rate before the extension is processed.

Can I extend multiple times?

Yes — there’s no limit on the number of extensions, as long as the landlord agrees each time. Each extension should be processed through Uniplaces to keep your booking up to date.

What if I need to extend urgently with very little notice?

Contact both your landlord and the Uniplaces support team immediately. Explain the urgency — the team will do what they can to help facilitate a quick resolution, but there are no guarantees if the landlord has other commitments for the property.
