En 1852 fut fondé à l'Instituto Politécnico do Porto, rebaptisé plus tard l'Institut industriel et commercial de Porto. En 1918, l'Institut industriel et l'Institut commercial se séparèrent formellement. En 1975, l'Institut industriel de Porto changea de nom pour devenir l'Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Portoet fut changé en intstitut d'enseignement universitaire, et en 76, l'Institut commercial suivi le même chemin : il devint connu sous le nom d'École de comptabilité et d'administration de Porto, et comme un lieu d'enseignement universitaire supérieur.
