Estrela is a really charming neighbourhood: it could be one Lisbon's nicest areas. It is a noble side of town, quite aristocratic, with really rich history. Living in Estrela, you'll be able to explore the beautiful Estrela gardens, and discover some historic shops, cafés and restaurants. Be on the lookout for tiny, hidden bars: you have some incredible spots around here that nearly nobody knows about. It's a cool neighbourhood but might not be very studenty. The rents are generally more expensive than in other nearby neighbourhoods (like Santos or Ajuda). The plus side is rooms here are usually in brand new, refurbished apartments in old historical buildings. There aren't a lot of transportation option to get around this neighbourhood, though. Rato metro station is the closest one, and there are trams and some buses stopping at Estrela gardens.
