Penha de França

Lisbon, Portugal

Popular among Erasmus students and people from every corner of the world, Penha de França is a melting pot of cultures. Here, you'll be able to experience a true global experience, thanks to all of the shops and restaurants its diverse community provide Penha de França with. Located on one of Lisbon's many hills, the neighbourhood has several miradouros you can admire the city's views from... and if you're lucky, you can even see them from your flat! Despite it being a multicultural neighbourhood, Penha de França is perfect for students who want to discover the Portuguese culture. The area is always teeming with people, especially on its main retail street (Rua Morais Soares). Most buildings are quite old, so don't expect to see much modern architecture around you. The area is located quite close to the city centre – you can walk there, take a bus, or hop on the metro at the Arroios, Anjos or Intendente stations. If you study at IST, you can easily walk to classes. As there are several public transport options, getting to other university hubs is also easy.

The neighbours

This neighbourhood is very popular among students, as the prices are affordable, especially if you consider its proximity to the city centre and its quality of life.

Interesting points

Check out the Miradouro da Nossa Senhora de Penha de França – located at the top of the hill. Go there with friends, grab a bottle of wine, and watch the sun set.

You will fall in love with

Penha de França's mixture of cultures will make you feel like you're travelling around the world - trying different cuisines and hearing several languages.

The lifestyle

The neighbourhood has a typical, Portuguese hustle bustle: it's busy. But there are many restaurants and small parks, where you can chill out.

About the city

Lisbon is a laid back city that likes to eat, drink and dance.

It has all the culture and events of a European capital, but it’s a city you can enjoy at a much slower pace. Make the most of the awesome weather at the beaches, chilling at riverside cafés or sunbathing in the city’s gardens.

From enjoying a few beers in the streets, to crazy Erasmus events in bars and clubs, there are parties to go to every night.
